Museums

Discover Franklin’s rich history when you visit these three museums that are all within walking distance of each other in Historic Downtown Franklin.

The Macon County Historical Museum traces our historical past. Artifacts are on display from the earliest civilization of the area to mid Twentieth Century. The museum makes every effort to preserve the rich history and heritage of the Cherokee who were the true first citizens of Macon County.

The Scottish Tartans Museum is totally unique in the fact it is the only one of its kind in the United States. The museum is a direct extension of the Scottish Tartans Society in Keith, Scotland. The collection housed showcases our rich Scottish roots.

Franklin, NC is known far and wide as the “Gem Capital of the World”. Tiffany’s mined here for sapphires and rubies. Learn about our “gem” connection at the Franklin Gem & Mineral Museum that is housed in the old Macon County Jail built in 1850. Admission is free. (Species from around the world are also on display in a free museum at Ruby City Gems.)
